brilligspoons: (iron man YES)
So, I made a thing on Friday night.

Pic! )

My shoulder is still radiating pain down my right arm from cranking the forge blower (as seen here) and swinging a hammer down on an anvil for a couple hours, but GUYS, blacksmithing is fun! I mean, frustrating as hell until you figure out what the fuck you're doing (and even then you spend an inordinate amount of time going OH GOD WHY IS THE IRON NOT HEATING UP WHY IS THIS IMPOSSIBLE), but that's pretty much how all crafty-type things are for me. The dudes at the forge were really nice and hilarious, neither [livejournal.com profile] sky_was_green nor I came away with any serious burns or anything, and I kind of want to go back and make more stuff. Maybe in the spring? We'll see.

Anyway, I got to hang out with Tina and Decklin's cats for a few hours on Saturday afternoon, and then there was the Project Runway finale and Iron Man 3 to watch. Yesterday I played a lot of WoW, caught up on The Voice, and did laundry. So...I was a little productive, at least.

Also yesterday morning: Bella facetimed me for help on a school project. :D :D :D Am the most ridiculous of ridiculous aunts, I realize, but I can't help but be pleased that she wanted to consult with me. She had to paint a pumpkin to look like a character from a book and answer some questions about personality traits that the author explicitly shows the character having with examples. Luckily for all involved, she's reading the first Harry Potter book and I have scary recall abilities? So we settled on honor and curiosity as the traits to focus on, and I gave her specific sections of the book to reference.

Yes, my $100,000 degree in English literature finally gets some use. \o?

Oh, and Yuletide assignments went out! I'd be a lot more excited if I could make myself write anything at all. BUT. I matched on two fandoms this year, so if I can kick my ass into gear, maybe I'll write my recipient two stories. :D? Still need to figure out how my TWHols fic is going to work, too, but I think I know the main plot. I'm also still interested in doing NaNo next month, but I need to sit down and work out more character details and do some world-building before I fully commit. Maybe I'll do that this coming weekend.

Okay. Let's do this, Monday.
brilligspoons: (douche!)
Finally talked to Doug about how stressed out and overwhelmed I've been since June, and though this hasn't magically made everything better like I'd hoped it would, it IS nice to know that he's aware of it all. Anyway, I'm trying not to think about this shit too much because it makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry when I do, so here is a list of things in my life that are good these days.

+This weekend I'm going apple-picking with [livejournal.com profile] paper_tzipporah and Kyleigh! Kyleigh has NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE, so I am maybe a little too thrilled about introducing her to the experience. :D

+In related news, I am going to make all the applesauce.

+Also this weekend: [livejournal.com profile] sky_was_green and I are going to have fancy s'mores at Max Brenner!

+Have fallen deep into the abyss known as One Direction and it is ruining my life.

+Television! The Sleepy Hollow pilot was decent (have yet to watch the second episode), and I thoroughly enjoy everything Abbie Mills chooses to be. Elementary is back tonight (YAY). The last few weeks of Project Runway have been intense, but it's cool because most of my favorites are still in the competition. The Voice blind auditions started this week and I may have gotten [livejournal.com profile] paper_tzipporah hooked on it COMPLETELY BY ACCIDENT.

I think that's all I'm watching right now. I have to finish Orphan Black and Hell on Wheels and catch up with Almighty Johnsons, but it's hard to make myself do that when I just want to watch Big Fat Quiz Show episodes and 1D vids all the time.

+TWHols assignments went out! Yuletide nominations happened! NaNo is nearly upon us! Maybe one of these days I'll stop feeling like I should never write again and work on something. Anything. Whatever.

+I finally know what my family's holiday plans are. Have literally been asking since May. This shit is usually set in stone at Christmas dinner for the following year.

Alright, back to work with me. Happy Thursday, all. <3
brilligspoons: (coffeecoffeecoffee)
We watched series 2 of The Hour on Saturday, and, uh. Goddamn. I can't believe the BBC just fucking cancelled it after all that ending. [livejournal.com profile] paper_tzipporah and I were very much Not Okay during the whole finale (literally clutching each other, okay, it was INTENSE), much to the amusement of [livejournal.com profile] metonymy and [livejournal.com profile] mcwonthelottery. Anyway, I need to write that story where the news team plus Marnie are in this complicated polyamorous relationship - because Hector realizes not only that Bel and Freddie are a package deal but also he's kind of okay with that, and Bel and Lix have this ~thing together, sometimes with Freddie, and everyone falls more than a little in love with Marnie, and really it takes a village to raise a baby, you know?

In conclusion: The Hour, guys. I was not at all expecting to love it as much as I do, and you should all check it out if you have the chance. Totally worth it, even considering the epic emotional cliffhanger it ends on.

I'm trying to get back into the habit of going for a walk/run (or whatever you'd call that thing where you sprint for 30-60 seconds, walk for 5 minutes, rinse and repeat) every night. I don't remember consciously giving up on it last winter, but it's been almost a year and I'm just now getting the itch to get up and prowl around my neighborhood back. Feels good, but we'll see how long my resolve lasts once the weather starts to turn cold again.

(On the flip side of that: it's almost autumn, which is my favorite season, and that means it's almost time to go apple-picking, which in turns means I should start looking for a better pie dish and more tupperware for when I make applesauce. :D :D :D)

In actual conclusion, here is my fashion tag on tumblr. Uh, for no reason other than I feel like the pretty with you. Happy Tuesday?
brilligspoons: (i hate everyone)
The bad news is, my vacation is over and I'm back at work. The good news is, I've gotten myself addicted to Castle and ship Beckett/Castle like burning, and now I need fic recs. :D?

It was really nice to be home (mostly) for the last week. I slept and watched TV a lot and read a little, and while I didn't get as much writing done as I'd hoped, I feel as though I've recharged my batteries enough to get me through the next couple of weeks. [livejournal.com profile] paper_tzipporah and I hung out on the 4th; Cathy came up Friday afternoon and stayed through Sunday morning, and we went down to Connecticut to visit John, Jen, and Evan for a few hours on Saturday. Other than that I was on my own. I meant to go down to Cape Cod with [livejournal.com profile] sky_was_green on Monday, but I started feeling gross and peopled-out over the weekend, so we'll have to go some other time.

Currently slogging my way through 1Q84. I'm enjoying it, it's just...really dense. Like, ridiculously so. I've taken to playing it out in my head as an anime series, which is helping me get into the rhythm of the dialogue and the characters' thoughts (sometimes I have trouble reading novels in translation. See: every Russian novel and play I have ever attempted to get through. Manga and foreign comic books are easier because there are pictures to go along with the dialogue). Still, I'm probably not going to be able to finish it before it's due on Friday, so I'll just take a break before requesting it again.

Joni and I went to see The Heat on Thursday, and it was AMAZING. I highly recommend it, guys. I basically want to cross-stitch samplers of everything Melissa McCarthy said in the movie. There need to be a million more female-led buddy cop movies.

The Almighty Johnsons )

More on Welcome to Night Vale: [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash linked to where you can find the episodes (they're all available for free!) here, so I'll just reiterate - they're really great! If podcasts aren't your thing, some lovely person is in the process of transcribing the episodes here! There's an emerging fandom that's produced some wonderful fanart and excellent fic already, too. I have some fic recs, if anyone's interested. Knowledge of events from episodes 19a, 19b, and 25 is kind of important, so. Get on that. :D!

*The Rat and the Ruby Slippers (Carlos/Cecil) [Carlos is having the strangest dreams, and the strangest headaches, like there's something he's supposed to be remembering. Not to mention the intern's wedding coming up, and that new chemical StrexCorp wants him to develop. It's going to be a busy week.]

*The Knowable Universe (Carlos/Cecil) [“Let us approach a much more modest question: not whether we can know the universe or the Milky Way Galaxy or a star or a world. Can we know, ultimately and in detail, a grain of salt?” – Carl Sagan // or, Immediately following the events of Episode 25, Carlos realizes he’s been asking the wrong questions.]

*Somewhere a Band is Playing (Carlos/Cecil) [Cecil and Carlos deal with life, sex, pancakes, and possibly being anthropomorphic personifications. Also, Night Vale history as told by Night Vale, and a step-by-step guide to defying Death. Today's weather is by Ray Bradbury.]

*The Voice of Night Vale (Carlos/Cecil) [Cecil is, at worst, not much longer for this world. (And at best, a bit high-maintenance.)]

There's a decent amount of good stories for WTNV on AO3; these are just a few of my favorites.

Alright, I have work to catch up on. Later.
brilligspoons: (fuck)
Let it be known throughout the land that [livejournal.com profile] sky_was_green and I continue to use Groupon for awesome.

Today's adventure: sailing. Twice we've gone whale-watching out from Cape Ann, but this excursion a) was a lot closer to home, b) also BYOB :D, and c) involved a lot fewer people (12 passengers and 2 crew in total). Also, the boat we went out on is called a ~*friendship sloop*~. It was definitely the best possible use of our Sunday afternoon.

At some point in the future, we're going to take sailing lessons. )

EDIT: I should mention that Karen and I did NOT coordinate our outfits beforehand, so it was happenstance that we were both wearing blue tops and jean bottoms (pants for her, skirt for me). Oops.
brilligspoons: (mr. b)
Last night [livejournal.com profile] sky_was_green and I went to a painting class at one of our favorite North End restaurants (The Living Room, where we discovered St. Germain's liqueur for the first time) and had an excellent time trying to recreate a painting of the Boston skyline and accompanying harbor. Uh, so much so that we've decided to do two other painting classes in the future? I mean, there was drinking and good music and really enthusiastic instructors - one of them was French and had a handlebar moustache - so all in all, not a bad way to spend an evening. Also, while our finished products were nowhere near perfect, they weren't, you know, horrible. Doug even knew what the painting was of before I could tell him. :D?

Anyway, this is mine:

BKwFwfbCQAAtIRo

Basically everyone there was like, "Rough day, huh?" WHATEVER. I DON'T FEEL I NEED TO EXPLAIN MY ART TO YOU.

Anyway. I'm tired and annoyed with everything today, so after work I'm going home and cooking and watching TV and reading fic and cleaning out the back porch so our landlady doesn't yell at us anymore.
brilligspoons: (agkh!)
So it's an established fact that the best thing we've ever done around here is hire Kyleigh, but in case you'd forgotten how awesome she is, this happened this morning:

Cut for pic size )

In related news, Kait and I are going to see Iron Man 3 tonight! Catch you on the flip side.
brilligspoons: (irene)
I'm very, very tired, friends. Also procrastinating/bored, so here's a meme that I'm stealing from people on my friends list:

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's Parker ...she likes money and cereal." Then post this in your own journal [only if you feel inclined]. In return, ask me anything you'd like to know about me and I'll give you an answer.

Tell me things! Ask me questions! Help me avoid working on all of my projects and thinking about how tired I am!
brilligspoons: (steve/tony)
Man, you know what really sucks? The Monday back at work after a week's vacation. It's pretty much the worst. Luckily I have [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash and Doug and Kyleigh around to wrap my computer monitor and phone in rubber bands while I'm gone, in spite of the 50/50 chance that I'd stab them all in retribution.

:D

Here, have some blurry pictures from my phone. )

\o/

Tonight I'm going home with Kait so I can see [livejournal.com profile] mcwonthelottery's face for a bit, and tomorrow is writing with [livejournal.com profile] sky_was_green! Posting at [livejournal.com profile] tw_holidays starts Saturday! I have a metric fuckton of work to do before Wednesday and need to avoid crawling under my desk for an extended session of gross sobbing!

Also I should probably start looking for people's presents. I think I know what I'm doing for Bella and Gavin and Evan, and Sarah and Kati should be easy. The little cousins...I don't even know. Maybe I'll chip in on whatever Cathy's getting them, but we'll see. I'm not really sure what they're into anyway. /shrug

...and maybe I should eat some real food at some point. Woman cannot live on rice krispie treats and chai lattes alone, or something.
brilligspoons: (jem is totally outrageous!)
This weekend we had Florida (a.k.a. [livejournal.com profile] momebie and [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers) visiting, and despite the fact that I was exhausted and cranky from the last few weeks of work, I ended up having an AWESOME time. We did brunch at this cafe/bookstore on Newbury Street on Saturday morning (decent food! friendly waitstaff! books! I would definitely go back there at some point!), and then I went home to nap and do some work things.

Yesterday morning I met up with [livejournal.com profile] mcwonthelottery, [livejournal.com profile] sky_was_green, [livejournal.com profile] metonymy, [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash, KL, and Lisa at Park Street where we embarked on our own special version of the Freedom Trail, which was dubbed Jerk Tour. Becca spent a lot of time editing the Freedom Trail guide to fit our particular brand of humor, and she did a kick-ass job of leading all of us jerklings around the city. If you follow any/all of us on Twitter, you were probably inundated with quotes and pictures for four and a half hours as we wandered through Beacon Hill, the Common, a couple graveyards, Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market, and other places. It was excellent times, all around, let me tell you.

Some favorites -

"The unicorn IS Boston?"
"No, the unicorn OF Boston."
"Okay. I had some issues with that metaphor."
"We're horny and a little mythical."

~

"I'm really concerned about these tombstones three deep."
"They had OT3s back then too, guys."

~

"Fuck you, hungry poor people!"
"You're in America now--you pay full price."

~

"Iamanoppressedcolumn dot tumblr dot com."

~

"'There were so few slaves left in Massachusetts that slavery was abolished.' We got rid of slaves...ery!"

~

"I said 'erected,' Margaret. You had one job to do!"
"Sorry, I was singing Brick House."
"I'll allow it."

~

"::points to circle on ground:: This is the site of the Boston Massacre."
"::everyone immediately steps inside it::"

~

"Not the last time the phrase 'baby I need your underwear for America' got a girl out of her pants."

~

And so on. :D

But now we're back at work, and everything is terrible. I have a metric fuckton of stuff to do today and no will to do it. I have to call some number this afternoon after 3 to find out if I actually have to show up to jury duty tomorrow. REALLY hoping I don't, but preparing for the worst. (Yes, I know this is my civic duty. But it's super inconvenient, okay? And I'm allowed to complain about it. Whatever.)

How are all of you, friends? Everybody still in one piece? Hopefully?

I'm participating in [livejournal.com profile] teenwolf_bb, which I feel is an excellent use of my time. I've even managed to plot out most of the story, and I'm SUPER excited for it! It may or may not end in Lydia/Stiles/Derek - the way I've got it set up, it could very well turn out to be gen? So we'll see how THAT goes.

*dances*

Tonight we're going out for dinner and drinks and generally making the other patrons of Sunset Cantina hate us, and tomorrow I'm meeting up with Brenda for dinner and seeing Bourne Legacy. Saturday and Sunday will most likely be spent sleeping, cleaning, doing laundry, and/or writing.

Speaking of - are any local folks interested in meeting up for writing group on Sunday? Possibly in Harvard or Central, or even Porter? I am flexible with the location and time, of course. Let me know!

Last night a group of us went out to Border Cafe for dinner (om nom nom), and it was good times all around! Except for the fake parrot that spent all night judging me, but that's another story. I pretty much passed out right when I got home (I was REALLY tired, okay, and the two glasses of sangria I drank before/during dinner only made that worse) and woke up sometime around midnight, and of course I couldn't fall back asleep after that. Woohoo.

Buuuut I ended up reading Young Avengers: Children's Crusade, which was an A++ life choice for sure. I'd recently read the initial YA run and some of the tie-ins with other titles and come away from them feeling all warm and fuzzy inside, but Crusade sort of...tipped my feelings over the edge. :D?

Fic desire involving a minor spoiler for the end of Children's Crusade )

*ahem*

Today is a No Boss day, so I'm hoping to get some writing done. We'll see if that actually works out. >.>

Happy Wednesday, friends!

Blah blah blah foot injury! )

Also I am savoring my first coffee since Friday. :D :D :D :D

I started playing the Mists of Pandaria beta on Friday night! I went with the new race/class combo like 99% of the other people playing, and I'm REALLY enjoying it so far. I only made it to level 4 before the server started kicking me off, but my preliminary feelings about the pandarens and the monk class are mostly positive. Obviously there are TONS of issues that need to be worked out. For example, the first quest chain involves you burning the Edict of Temperance (I wasn't paying attention as to why really), but a) there were THOUSANDS OF PLAYERS TRYING TO DO IT AT ONCE, and b) there was nothing blocking out a space in front of the edict, so you couldn't get anywhere near the fucking thing in order to complete the quest. I ended up grouping with a bunch of people (after 30 minutes of trying on my own), and like a minute later it worked and I could move on to the next thing. Ugh.

Regardless! The new zone is SUPER PRETTY. I'll have to take more screencaps next time I sign in. Also I am loving the pandaren design a LOT, oh my god:

Screencap! )

ISN'T SHE BEAUTIFUL? Her name is Arynna, and I love her. I'm still trying to puzzle out some of the aspects of the monk class, but the fighting style is really quite lovely to watch. Yes, I am much more likely to comment on how pretty things are instead of how functional they might be. One of these days the two will meet. I think.

Didn't play Saturday or Sunday on account of how awkward it was to elevate my foot while sitting at my desk. Actually, I didn't do much of anything beyond mainline season 1 of NCIS (and start season 2 yesterday). I edited one of the BBs a little? But I didn't write any new words. Bah. >:\

ANYWAY. How are you all doing? Anything good/bad going on, friends?
brilligspoons: (macbeth got screwed)
Last night [livejournal.com profile] paper_tzipporah and I went to see The Jezabels, and they were pretty much amazing. It's always interesting to find out if singers/bands sound worse than/as good as/better than they sound on an album, and I think they fall into the 'as good as if not better than' demographic. They didn't chat much with the crowd until the end, but there was a really good vibe on stage, and you could tell that the band was invested in their music, so. :D Good times all around!

They played Rosebud, City Girl, Long Highway, and Endless Summer from their full album (and maybe one or two more than I didn't recognize at the time? I think Trycolour and Nobody Nowhere?), and then they also sang Mace Spray, A Little Piece, Dark Storm, Easy to Love, and Hurt Me. (They didn't play Sahara Mahala, which made Joni a sad panda.) It was all awesome, and I would LOVE to see them again.

The first opener was this dude who wasn't all that great, so I don't remember his name. But! the second opener! It was a band called Imagine Dragons, and Joni and I LOVED them! Their songs were just overall powerful and heavy and interesting, and watching them was kind of intense. Also the lead singer was really sweet and engaging between songs. Uh, basically I loved them enough to buy their music right when I got home. I have to say that they're a little less impressive recorded, but it's all good. If you ever have the chance to see them perform, do it! I meant to put one of their songs on tumblr this morning, but I overslept - I'll do it tonight! :)

Anyway, time to get some work done. Peace out, yo.

EMERALD HOUSE RISING BY PEG KERR, GUYS. THAT'S THE BOOK I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR. And soon it will be in my possession, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sky_was_green's librarianing skills and Amazon. (That's half of this morning spent on searching/making other people search for it. I feel like this is an excellent waste use of mine and others' time.) I think [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash is joking/being a jerk when she says my whole life has now been validated by this find, but I seriously feel so much better, so whatever.

VICTORY OVER MY SHITE MEMORY. BOO-YA.

(In case you're wondering - I joined Goodreads yesterday (find me here!) and have spent most of the last 18 hours or so adding all the books ever to my read and to-read lists. I sifted through Patricia C. Wrede and found a TON of novels by her that I know I'd read once upon a time but had forgotten until now, and as I was doing that, I was like WAIT. THERE WAS THAT ONE - UGH, WHAT WAS IT - I READ IT A MILLION TIMES WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME. So, yeah. Woohoo!)

Aaaaaand that happened.

Tonight I'm going to the gym after a week's recovery period (oh, hey, I can move without my muscles crying out in anguish!). I have approximately a million words to write before midnight to make the monthly minimum for GYWO. And I should probably, you know, actually do work. :D?

Happy Tuesday, all!

So [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant reveals went up! [livejournal.com profile] rakehell_leader is the person responsible for the ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY WONDERFUL fic I received (which I linked to in this entry a few days ago, oh my god). I couldn't be happier or more grateful - it's truly a lovely piece, and it still makes my heart go all achy. <333

Uh, I ended up writing four stories altogether, three of which have been reposted at [livejournal.com profile] hardlyabird and AO3.

Lover, Come Hover for [livejournal.com profile] chiasmus, set in a non-powered modern AU - in which Charles is nervous about meeting Erik's old law school friends and needs some reassurance.

There's a Hope for [livejournal.com profile] big_banggang, where I just sort of ignored Cuba and made Erik and Charles have a snowball fight and then share a scarf.

It's Only Xenobiology, Darling for [livejournal.com profile] averzierlia, who wanted human!Erik encountering worstVulcanever!Charles.

I also wrote In the Night Life for [livejournal.com profile] nakedfiction, which is a fusion with the Parasol Protectorate series. I haven't reposted it anywhere for the very specific reason of it's not actually finished. Like, it stands on its own, no worries there! But there is SO MUCH MORE to be added to it. I've actually written another thousand or so words that just didn't make it to this version, mostly about bb!Charles playing chess with Professor Lyall, which I thought would confuse the fuck out of people if they haven't read the books already. So those scenes were cut for the exchange's purposes. The full story will appear in the future. Nebulous future, mind, but...yeah. *hand wave*

I just want to thank and give coffee and chocolate to [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash for running the whole thing. She is the queen of all things mutant-related, got it? And you should all give her virtual hugs immediately. YOU'RE THE BEST, KAIT. <333

And now I'm gonna go read some of the comics I picked up earlier. \o/

So this is a thing I'm doing in 2012:

GetYourWordsOut: Back for a 4th Year!
Pledges & Requirements | GYWO.net

I've written more words (and with more frequency) in 2011 than I have since college, and I very much feel like I need to keep up the momentum. Hopefully this will be enough incentive/encouragement to work with? :D? Anyway, I pledged 150k words, which [livejournal.com profile] theemdash tells me is a little over 400 words a day. Not too bad! And considering the fact that I will be writing 2 smaller Big Bangs early in the year, I think I'll be okay. We'll see.

Office Christmas is today! We have some new additions to Team Jerk, in that [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash got me the Cap plushie, and I got her the Hulk plushie. Office Avengers will have plenty of adventures in the future, I'm sure (at least once Tony and Steve get back from their honeymoon on my shelf). ALSO ALSO ALSO. IN CASE THERE WAS ANY DOUBT THAT I HAVE THE BEST BOSS. Doug got me the Stark logo mug that Tony has in the Iron Man movies! IT IS THE GREATEST. I actually gave him a hug, that is how excited I am by this thing. :DDD

Uh, yeah. \o/

I doubt I'll be around much over the next few days, so if you're trying to reach me, I suggest Twitter or email (or texts, if you have my number). Mostly I'll be spending time with my family, Tristan and Ashley, and Loretta and Jay, plus attempting to work on the BBMUs in whatever free time I can dredge up (rough drafts are due on the 10th omg), but I'm too codependent on the internet to be far from it for very long.

Happy holidays, friends! Stay safe! <333

So I've been on LJ for a handful of years now, and in that time I think I've cycled through at LEAST a billion (-ish) different fandoms and made friends in probably each one. I suspect this is something that just sort of happens naturally. Anyway, I don't get the chance to talk with all of you nearly as much as I would like - most of that is on me since I've developed the terrible habit of not commenting on lots of entries like I used to. And, believe me, it's not because I don't like you, it's just that it's been hard trying to relate to other people lately - family, coworkers, friends I see on a regular basis, pretty much everyone. IDK why.

Regardless. What I'm saying is, if you want to defriend me on LJ, whether it's because you don't particularly care to read my entries anymore or because we don't have anything in common right now or whatever, you should feel free to do so! I won't be hurt. :) I'm going through my flist and taking off journals that appear to be dead, too. If I take you off and you're actually still there, silently stalking me, just let me know and I'll add you back.

Or, uh, if you happen to be stalking me and want me to just add you, also let me know? Though I doubt anyone out there is doing that. Still. There's your invitation, sorry I didn't have time to get it engraved. :D?
