Thanks to the snow and rain we got this weekend, Boston is now a block of ice. You can imagine how exciting my walk to the bus stop and to the office was this morning. Weeeeee. :\

Anyway, things!

Yesterday I went to the MFA with [ profile] sky_was_green and [ profile] barbed_whispers! Karen's a member, so we were able to get into the Sargent watercolors exhibit super early - not that the museum was at all crowded the whole time we were there (the bad weather did serve a purpose, I suppose), but it was nice to wander around and see only the guards and two or three other visitors. Strange, but nice. We also got to go through the She Who Tells a Story exhibit, which was AMAZING and possibly my favorite thing I saw yesterday. It's closing on January 12, so if you're around Boston between now and then and haven't seen it, I highly recommend you check it out.

Karen and I also went on a gallery lecture called "Expats, Immigrants, and Exiles: Geopolitics and Art" led by this really great and knowledgable grad student who I desperately want to be BFFs with. I would HAPPILY listen to her talk about art and identity and cultural context for the rest of my life. I also want to buy her a million drinks for deftly handling this one dude's inability to understand American South =\= Mexico. (Just. All the applause for this woman, holy shit.)

Other thing that happened: DESOLATION OF SMAUG. [ profile] starsparkle333, [ profile] paper_tzipporah, and I went to the midnight premiere and HOLY FUCK, YOU GUYS. I'll...just go ahead and put the rest of my thoughts under a cut, because there will be spoilers. Uh, I should preface this part by saying that I really do love the movie and want to see it a million more times. DON'T THROW ANYTHING AT ME.

In conclusion: I may have reached the perfect balance of critical and batshit-in-love fangirl on this one. /shrug

Internet, I am pleased to say that I made it through yet another family Thanksgiving without punching any of my siblings. It was a close call at some points, but I restrained myself by choosing to pour myself another glass of wine rather than engaging. Hooray! I'm growing as a person! Among other things.

It was nice getting to see my nieces and nephews, too (Dad, Cathy, and I Skyped with Sarah and Kathi on Thursday afternoon - UGH THEY'RE SO CUTE). Bella and Gavin are both getting taller, and it's TERRIBLE. Bella's only 9 and already at my shoulder height. :( Look, I really enjoy not being the shortest person in the family with them around, and I'm just not prepared for them to be bigger than me quite yet. Luckily this dapper little gentleman still has some growing to do:

Monsieur Evan )

(Best thing: he likes to play hockey - my brother is a hockey coach - with spatulas, oven mitts, and bottle caps, so he spent most of Thursday doing that in my parents' kitchen. I may have died from cute a couple times.)

Anyway, in non-family news, the Teen Wolf Holidays 2013 fic collection went live today! Check it out here. There are 60 stories all told, which is AWESOME. :D

Another year of my life has passed without me being crowned eternal empress of the universe, so. I don't know what that's about. I'll just be sitting here at my desk, disappointed and slightly under-caffeinated, as per usual.

Last Wednesday [ profile] paper_tzipporah and I went to see The Lone Bellow play at the Paradise Rock Club! They were AMAZING, and as tired as I was that day, I'm so glad we went. I hope the band puts out new music soon. They played a new song at one point that sounded awesome, and I wish I had it on my phone to listen to on repeat one forever. The crowd was really great, too - the place was packed, everyone was dancing and singing along, and it was so much fun. A++ experience, would definitely go again.

Anyway, you guys should check out their music! I've posted three of their songs on tumblr recently, so I'll link them here for your listening pleasure:

We watched series 2 of The Hour on Saturday, and, uh. Goddamn. I can't believe the BBC just fucking cancelled it after all that ending. [ profile] paper_tzipporah and I were very much Not Okay during the whole finale (literally clutching each other, okay, it was INTENSE), much to the amusement of [ profile] metonymy and [ profile] mcwonthelottery. Anyway, I need to write that story where the news team plus Marnie are in this complicated polyamorous relationship - because Hector realizes not only that Bel and Freddie are a package deal but also he's kind of okay with that, and Bel and Lix have this ~thing together, sometimes with Freddie, and everyone falls more than a little in love with Marnie, and really it takes a village to raise a baby, you know?

In conclusion: The Hour, guys. I was not at all expecting to love it as much as I do, and you should all check it out if you have the chance. Totally worth it, even considering the epic emotional cliffhanger it ends on.

I'm trying to get back into the habit of going for a walk/run (or whatever you'd call that thing where you sprint for 30-60 seconds, walk for 5 minutes, rinse and repeat) every night. I don't remember consciously giving up on it last winter, but it's been almost a year and I'm just now getting the itch to get up and prowl around my neighborhood back. Feels good, but we'll see how long my resolve lasts once the weather starts to turn cold again.

(On the flip side of that: it's almost autumn, which is my favorite season, and that means it's almost time to go apple-picking, which in turns means I should start looking for a better pie dish and more tupperware for when I make applesauce. :D :D :D)

In actual conclusion, here is my fashion tag on tumblr. Uh, for no reason other than I feel like the pretty with you. Happy Tuesday?

The bad news is, my vacation is over and I'm back at work. The good news is, I've gotten myself addicted to Castle and ship Beckett/Castle like burning, and now I need fic recs. :D?

It was really nice to be home (mostly) for the last week. I slept and watched TV a lot and read a little, and while I didn't get as much writing done as I'd hoped, I feel as though I've recharged my batteries enough to get me through the next couple of weeks. [ profile] paper_tzipporah and I hung out on the 4th; Cathy came up Friday afternoon and stayed through Sunday morning, and we went down to Connecticut to visit John, Jen, and Evan for a few hours on Saturday. Other than that I was on my own. I meant to go down to Cape Cod with [ profile] sky_was_green on Monday, but I started feeling gross and peopled-out over the weekend, so we'll have to go some other time.

Currently slogging my way through 1Q84. I'm enjoying it, it's just...really dense. Like, ridiculously so. I've taken to playing it out in my head as an anime series, which is helping me get into the rhythm of the dialogue and the characters' thoughts (sometimes I have trouble reading novels in translation. See: every Russian novel and play I have ever attempted to get through. Manga and foreign comic books are easier because there are pictures to go along with the dialogue). Still, I'm probably not going to be able to finish it before it's due on Friday, so I'll just take a break before requesting it again.

Joni and I went to see The Heat on Thursday, and it was AMAZING. I highly recommend it, guys. I basically want to cross-stitch samplers of everything Melissa McCarthy said in the movie. There need to be a million more female-led buddy cop movies.

More on Welcome to Night Vale: [ profile] pocky_slash linked to where you can find the episodes (they're all available for free!) here, so I'll just reiterate - they're really great! If podcasts aren't your thing, some lovely person is in the process of transcribing the episodes here! There's an emerging fandom that's produced some wonderful fanart and excellent fic already, too. I have some fic recs, if anyone's interested. Knowledge of events from episodes 19a, 19b, and 25 is kind of important, so. Get on that. :D!

*The Rat and the Ruby Slippers (Carlos/Cecil) [Carlos is having the strangest dreams, and the strangest headaches, like there's something he's supposed to be remembering. Not to mention the intern's wedding coming up, and that new chemical StrexCorp wants him to develop. It's going to be a busy week.]

*The Knowable Universe (Carlos/Cecil) [“Let us approach a much more modest question: not whether we can know the universe or the Milky Way Galaxy or a star or a world. Can we know, ultimately and in detail, a grain of salt?” – Carl Sagan // or, Immediately following the events of Episode 25, Carlos realizes he’s been asking the wrong questions.]

*Somewhere a Band is Playing (Carlos/Cecil) [Cecil and Carlos deal with life, sex, pancakes, and possibly being anthropomorphic personifications. Also, Night Vale history as told by Night Vale, and a step-by-step guide to defying Death. Today's weather is by Ray Bradbury.]

*The Voice of Night Vale (Carlos/Cecil) [Cecil is, at worst, not much longer for this world. (And at best, a bit high-maintenance.)]

There's a decent amount of good stories for WTNV on AO3; these are just a few of my favorites.

Alright, I have work to catch up on. Later.

I had so many plans for this weekend. I was going to be productive! Really! But mostly I played WoW and avoided looking at the giant management guide Tamara and Doug want me to read in preparation for when they try to talk the AVP into paying for my PMP course and exam.

Gaming > career. Because that's a healthy way to live.

Cut because I highly doubt most of you care about my in-game life. )

This weekend some friends and various internet acquaintances were at Wiscon, and the panels they live-tweeted sounded really interesting and made me jealous that I wasn't there basking in other people's intelligence. Cons aren't my thing usually (I've been to exactly two), and I get overwhelmed by masses of people pretty easily these days, but [ profile] pocky_slash tells me Wiscon sets up quiet rooms and the like? So I'm seriously considering going next year. I'm not 100% committed to it yet, but it's at least a possibility at this point.

Last night I went through my memory box and cleaned out some things that I have no particular attachment to anymore. I didn't mean to do this - I only opened it to put my recent movie ticket stubs in, but there were some things on the top that immediately made me unhappy, so I sorted through the rest. One of the things I threw out was a letter an ex-friend wrote to me during class (from the contents, I surmised that I was away in Arizona at the time). I was confused as to why I still had it, because I stopped being friends with this guy halfway through sophomore year, but reading through it made me wonder why we were ever friends with him to begin with. I had to text Ashley about it, naturally, and we shared a what the actual fuck, younger selves? moment.

I also found my high school yearbook photo. Good golly, my hair was long when I was 18. Oh, and I guess I still had some other things left over from high school in there? Which found their way into the trash, too. Ain't nobody got time for that shit.

Going to try to make some progress on at least one writing project tonight. I'm still avoiding the big bang for now, so I'm not entirely sure what else I want to work on. Quick, someone decide for me!

Back to work, I guess. :(

brilligspoons: (project it baby)
I wrote some things for a fic prompt meme on tumblr! They're all pretty short and generic, but I finally a) finished posting for the prompts people sent me, so YAY, and b) threw them up on AO3 for archiving purposes. I'm toying with the idea of writing North & South ficlets for the rest of the prompts, though I just took stock of all my current fandom obligations, and. That might not happen for a while. Still, I like the idea and will add it to my List of Things I Will Never Get Around to Doing.

ANYWAY, have some links:

3 for Vikings (Fight Me, Unbind Me, Offer Me)

2 for North & South (Love Me, Drink Me)

1 for The Almighty Johnsons (Haunt Me)

And now I will go back to convincing myself that rewriting everything I have so far for BBMU (because I just wrote 400 words that don't quite fit but that I like better than basically all preceding 2800 words) is a terrible no good idea.
brilligspoons: (needs to be least 3 times bigger)
Normally the first day back to work after vacation is terrible, but today is terrible magnified 1000 times. I'm pleased that things seem to have gone smoothly while I was gone, and it's relieving to know that most people managed to do what I needed them to without a lot of problems, but it's those few who just can't get their shit together no matter what that are bugging the shit out of me. Just do what I tell you! Don't argue with me! Those are the rules!

Anyway, vacation was mostly great. The kids were well-behaved 99% of the time, the museum was awesome (except for the panic attack I had), and the private suite we had at Yankee Stadium spoiled me for everything ever. Also we went for manicures on Saturday, and my nails are all glittery and wonderful.

I worked on my big bang a little by repurposing a piece of a Teen Wolf story I'd started last summer and never did anything with. I was bummed that it was just sitting in my gdocs gathering dust, so I'm happy that it was easily editable and fits with what I want to write. Still need to outline the rest of the story, but it's nice to have a beginning at least, you know? (Of course, everything I write now will be jossed by the start of season 3 in a few weeks, but whatever, it can be AU as of season 2, it's cool.)

Uh, I also started watching Vikings. I didn't expect to like it quite so much, but it's pretty great, and I want all of the fic for it immediately. I even wrote a little fluffy thing last night for [ profile] pearl_o. :D? And there's another story I have in the works as of this past Thursday. Most of you probably don't care. )

...that may end up being longer than a ficlet. Balls. But yeah, that's a thing.

I suppose I should get back to work now. Hmph.
brilligspoons: (TWO.WORDS.)
I Saw Three Ships reveals went up today! Was pleasantly surprised and happy to find out that [ profile] metonymy was the one who wrote my gift (which you can read here). :D :D :D And I wrote Between Everything, Yourself, and Home, which was my first (and probably last XD) foray into Revenge fandom. I mean, I liked writing the story and am satisfied with the finished product, but it's not one of those fandoms that I'm super into beyond the show, so. Oh well. It was cool! I would totally consider doing this exchange again next year! More threesomes always!

[ profile] bigbang_mixup signups start on Tuesday! Am signing up to do both mixing and writing again, but someone needs to take my internet away if I even think about taking on two stories this time around. It ended up being okay last year, but I'd rather not attempt that a second time. I will do two mixes, though. I have fandoms picked out for each already (ahahahaha oops), and a character focus for one, so I think I'm in a good place with those.

Tomorrow's Monday. Blegh.
brilligspoons: (time-traveling nazis)
Apparently reccing fics is what I do these days. To be fair, there are so many exchanges and challenges posting/revealing right now, it's kind of hard not to shove links in people's faces, you know? So whatever, I'm sure none of you are actually complaining.

I Saw Three Ships (the threesomes/moresomes anon exchange on DW) posted late Sunday night! The mystery writer who had me wrote an empty hourglass in the sand (Natasha/Coulson/Clint), and it's very pretty. Reveals are going up on the 13th, but if you've spent any time around me, or if you've read my f-locked entries over the last few weeks, I think the one I wrote is pretty obvious. >.> ANYWAY, another 3 Ships fic I really enjoyed was Heard You Fuck through the Wall (Lydia/Peter/Stiles). It's WEIRD and DARK and totally awesome, and I really love the author's style.

I made some other recommendations on Twitter yesterday. There are two Steve/Peggy/Bucky fics that I am 99% sure will interest some people 'round these parts. There's a bunch of other Avengers moresomes - Clint/Darcy/Steve, Tony/Bruce/Pepper/Betty, Luke/Jessica/Danny/Misty, to name a few - and some Doctor Who, Leverage, Sherlock Holmes, Stargate SG-1, Haven, and Luther as well. I haven't read any of these, but I make good mention in case you're interested, friends. It's worth a look-through if you're hard up for fic at the moment.

And here's a mini Teen Wolf reclist:

*You Are Here (Lydia & Stiles gen) [When they cross the boundary into Hale territory, Stiles shifts a little in his sleep, shoulders hunching. Lydia's immunity carries over into most of the supernatural world: she can't be bitten, she can't be poisoned, and she's never been able to do magic on her own. Unlike Stiles, she can't feel the veil that separates Beacon Hills from the rest of the world. Sometimes she wonders if what happened before they left would have turned out differently if she'd undergone some transformative alchemy, but usually she tries not to think about it at all.]

*Some Like It Hot (Stiles/Derek) [All Stiles wants is a night out with the girls but when Derek shows up, things go topsy-turvy very quickly, and he gets far more than he expected.]

*Best Laid Plans (Danny/Stiles) ["You want us to be fuck-buddies so I can get some rebound sex and you can get some experience with a guy?" Danny repeated slowly.]

*set all your regrets on fire (Peter/Stiles) [I’m going to die, Stiles thinks, remembering the last time he saw Peter Hale standing over the trunk of a car. I’m going to die, and no one will make my father eat his vegetables, and he’ll die of a heart attack before they even find my body. // Peter kidnaps Stiles. Meanwhile, a series of gruesome murders has the Argents and Derek’s pack working together.]

In other news, I watched a show about colossal squids last night. It freaked me out a bit - apparently squid eyes scare the fuck out of me! who knew! But not as much as the next episode I watched, which was about humboldt squids expanding their territory for no discernible reason and being pack-hunters and how they're going to eventually rise up out of the ocean and eat all of us.

Remind me never to watch nature shows about squids ever again. :(

[ profile] tw_holidays reveals went up this morning! And now that they have, I can actually post about the stories I wrote for it. I've been DYING to do so since posting started on 12/1 - I thought today would never come.

ANYWAY. Links below go to AO3.

1) Leaving Out the Whistles and Bells for [ profile] oldsmobile_98 (Derek/Stiles, sex pollen...sort of)

2) A Little Bit Farther Off the Ground for [ profile] mosca (Danny/Stiles, spaceship AU!)

3) Are You Satisfied (With an Easy Ride) for [ profile] espressopotluck (mostly Lydia gen with background Lydia/Jackson, Lydia/Erica, and Derek/Stiles)

And [ profile] geegollywiz13 wrote Laced in Pink for me! It's Lydia/Stiles/Derek with bonus crossdressing!

brilligspoons: (mst3k: revolutionary war)
As I said on Twitter yesterday, I could write a post about The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, but my feelings can be summed up by saying: I really love Middle Earth, you guys. I loved it when I was very small and watching the animated movies; I loved it when I was in middle school and reading the books for the first time; I loved it in high school when the first trilogy came out; I love it even more now. The movie was great, I cannot fucking wait for next winter, and. Yeah. Hobbits and dwarves, friends. <3

Anyway. I really should be cleaning my room and doing laundry, but in the spirit of avoidance, I think I'll post another Teen Wolf reclist.

*Show Me The Way Back Home Baby (Stiles/Derek) [In which Lydia and Jackson produce the world's cutest baby, and the pack goes crazy-- the good kind of crazy. Except for Derek, who is afraid of tiny cute babies and Stiles who plans to be the best Uncle ever. Even if Danny called dibs on Godfather.]

*Not Just a Victim (Of Your Carnivorous Lunar Activities) (Stiles/Danny) [In which Danny might have a small, make that infintismal crush on Stiles, Jackson gets outted as a werewolf, and Danny knows his life will never be the same.]

*An Algorithm for Mistakes (Lydia/Stiles) [Lydia has a plan: attend college, study the biological makeup of werewolves, win prizes, and wear amazing shoes. She does not expect to make friends with Stiles. Or flirt with Stiles. Or accidentally start a pack war with Stiles. Whatever. The point is, Lydia has a plan.]

*Then You Think Again (Stiles/Derek) [Derek says, "You reeked of me," which is unfair.  Stiles only smelled because he'd gotten covered in Derek's bodily fluids trying to staunch the bleeding.]

*Winter of the Fall (Stiles/Derek) [Of course it couldn't be an ordinary cold snap. Of course there was something supernatural to it. That was just how things worked in Beacon Hills. (or five times Stiles was cold and one time he wasn’t.)]

*White Lace (Boyd/Stiles) [He’s only wearing the panties. Erica had bought them for him as a joke – he’d once drunkenly mumbled about the wonders of lace – but the moment he’d seen them? He’d wanted to wear them.]

*Of Secrets and Confessions (Stiles/Danny) [Strange things are happening in Beacon Hills, but Danny refuses to let his brain go to Buffy-esque places, because he believes in science and reasonable explanations. When his friends are ready, they will tell him what's going on with them, he knows that. Meanwhile, he realizes that Stiles might be more than meets the eye as they start to become friends.]

*he pushed inside and made me new (Lydia/Stiles) ["I love Jackson," she says as soon as she's close enough that she doesn't have to raise her voice.
"Okay?" Stiles glances left to right, like her meaning is crouched in the darkness somewhere. "I love Taco Tuesdays. Back to you."]

*Cause of Death (Stiles/Derek) [It turns out that although Stiles may be the one who’s been caught wearing panties, he isn’t the only one with an awkward boner, and that makes him feel a whole lot better about this situation.]

*into that secret place where no one dares to go (Lydia/Stiles/Derek) [The first time he felt Lydia's soul, it felt like a sneeze.]

*can't be hateful, gotta be grateful (Stiles/Derek) ["Be cool, Dad, we've decided to con Grandma." (Or, the one where the Stilinski men drag Derek to Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma's and she gets the right wrong idea.)]

*Catalysis (Danny/Stiles) [The one where Stiles's grandmother comes to town, Danny agrees to be Stiles's fake boyfriend, Scott is annoyingly insightful, and there are vampires.]

*weak knees and sweaty palms (Danny/Stiles) [Stiles' first date.]

*Hunting the Snark (pack) [The author's summary for this fic makes it sound like a comedy - it's not one, really. Basically the pack seduces Derek, who is a feelings failboat.]

*hooked on (dangling by a yarn) (Stiles/Derek, pre-relationship) [One hundred days, ten scarves, one Christmas, and Stiles' dormant magic has to ruin everything.]

*California Golden Bears (Allison/Stiles, Allison/Scott/Stiles) [Allison has a typical first semester of college. She's just got to balance classes, extracurriculars, only having one boyfriend, and the occasional supernatural creature. She's got this.]

*things that fly, but cannot land (Allison/Lydia/Stiles) [If Allison has to explain to one more person that she is not dating her ex-boyfriend’s best friend (and really, she broke up with Scott so long ago that the ‘ex-boyfriend’ part has mostly dropped off that title) she is going to explode. Especially now that Stiles has a girlfriend of his own, a girlfriend Allison is definitely not attracted to. Or jealous of. Danny has no idea what he’s talking about, except for the fact that he actually kind of does. (or, the one where Allison writes about werewolves, Stiles is her roommate and everyone is in love with Lydia.)]

*we're catching bullets in our teeth (it's hard to do but they're so sweet) (Stiles/Derek) [Mr & Mrs Smith AU - Stiles says he's a Web Developer. Derek says he an Internal Auditor. They're both liars, but you can't exactly tell your significant other that you kill people for a living, now can you?]

*Practically Perfect (Stiles/Derek) [They pad back up the stairs, and Stiles looks at the paper. In crayon, it reads: WE NEED A NANNY PROBALLY. Reqirments:

- eyes light up

- wants to go places

- can travel between dimentions

- likes cheesebergers

- a wear wolf

- lisens to good music

- favorit color is pink

- has friends who can fly

- will merry our Dad
There is a stick figure drawing of a werewolf with red eyes and bared teeth, marrying Stiles on a cloud.]

Attempting not to get TOO excited for the new Trek movie, but the teaser trailer that came out sometime in the last few hours is making that REALLY FUCKING HARD. Because, well. *flail* Bendis linked to the Japanese version on his twitter that has a few extra seconds of footage (linking there since I can't open YouTube at work). I watched it, like, five times while I was sitting in Starbucks - really would like for it to be May now, please and thank you.

And, man, I don't know what's up with the black, cowl-y uniforms everyone was wearing, but I'm totally in favor. o___o

Felt gross and yucky all morning. But I managed to get out of bed and do stuff this afternoon, so I'm calling today a win. Now I just need to fold and put my clothes away so I can actually, you know, sleep on my bed.

...I'll get to it eventually.

Anyway, I have more Teen Wolf recs for those of you who are interested. :D

*Up All Night (always-a-girl!Derek/always-a-girl!Stiles) ["See if I ever cuddle you if you get ghost hypothermia," Stiles said. // Or, the one where they both get ghost hypothermia and shenanigans ensue. cisf!Derek/cisf!Stiles.]

*Painted By Numbers (Lydia/Stiles) [Of course, he does it for Lydia. She doesn't tell him what she's measuring him for and he knows better than to ask, but when he turns up to their next session to find a bag waiting on her bed, he knows what he's meant to do.]

*Bound Fast By Cords of Affliction (Isaac/Stiles) [Another day, another abduction. This time at least Stiles has company. But Isaac's memories aren't making things easy for either one of them.] [references child abuse]

*Somewhere with Your Back to It (Allison/Stiles) [Like a prize but not because they’ve both made it here, still standing, and now they’re carving this out just for themselves, something new and different and holy hell. Better. // Allison and Stiles begin.]

*You Taste Like Glitter (Danny/Stiles) [There was a time in Danny's life when he'd have sworn he had better things to do than sit in a club and check out the latest guy his ex is trying to hook up with. That is not the case tonight.]

*bleed you dry (Danny/Stiles, Peter/Stiles, refers to Danny/Peter/Stiles) [Okay, so maybe Danny's type is Serial Killers.]

*Together for Warmth (Allison/Scott/Stiles) [Allison, Scott, and Stiles keep each other warm. In more ways than one.]

*The Cold, The Dark, & The Silence (Allison/Stiles) [Allison just gives him a smile and says, “It’s okay, Stiles. That’s okay.” / It’s really not okay but Stiles can deal with that later.]

*There is a Brotherhood (Derek/Stiles) [The one where pledge brothers Stiles and Scott start a prank war with Derek Hale's fraternity.]

*Full Sun (Derek/Stiles) [Just in case they need a spark, Stiles concentrates, believes, really hard when he pushes each seed down into its little cup, and when the first new-green sprouts push up out of the soil and reach toward the sun, it does feel like magic. / The first time he really gets his hands in the earth, dirt jammed so deep under his fingernails he's never going to be able to scrub it out, back aching, frantic brain quiet for once, he knows it is.]

*Next Thursday (Danny/Stiles) [In which Stiles Stilinski has a werewolf for a best friend, a support group for that, hot chocolate with Lydia Martin and Danny Mahealani every Thursday evening, and an extremely anticlimactic coming out experience.]

*Amber Courage (Boyd/Stiles) [After the pack defeats the Alphas, Boyd and Stiles lay low together.]

*Spark, Smolder, Catch (Derek/Stiles) [When Stiles starts pulling down Derek's burnt-out house, Derek finds himself letting him. He doesn't know why. // Wherein Stiles and Derek are both broken and doing more damage might just be what they both need to move on.]

*This is Ridiculous (Derek/Stiles) [There's a unicorn in Beacon Hills. A fricken' unicorn. In fricken' Beacon Hills, California. And it turns out that unicorns aren't drawn towards virgins in a happy-go-lucky let-me-lay-my-not-at-all-metaphorical-horn-in-your-lap way. No. They kill them. And guess who's the only virgin idiotic enough to get sucked into the Beacon Hills supernatural scene? Stiles, that's who.]

*The Cards All Fall (Peter gen with background Derek/Stiles) [Peter needs his revenge. But for that, he can't be under constant surveillance. And so he comes up with a plan to distract Derek and Stiles with each other. Things go as expected, and then they don't. // AKA That one where Peter makes everyone's lives a little better completely by accident.]

*Seven years and a new skin (Isaac/Stiles) [It's not that Isaac heals, because he doesn't.]

*Off The Record (Isaac/Stiles, Isaac/Stiles/Danny) [There really can't be any room for scared in this equation.] [sequel to above]

*Hide Of A Life War (Derek/Stiles) [The one in which Stiles has lived to (legal) adulthood and, along the way, become a bit of a badass himself.]

*Figure 8 (Derek/Lydia/Stiles) [They are the frayed ends of braided rope that have soldered together after the blasts of heat - the bits that still remain, forever entwined, until there's no way they could ever breathe apart, in a tangled web only found when someone goes walking straight into it. The choice that comes with the stranger is far more difficult to deal with than the enemy himself.] [post-apocalyptic]
brilligspoons: (catastrophe)
So I totally didn't mean to play WoW for four hours last night, but I did, and it turned out to be an awesome decision. Not just because I find killing things in game terribly cathartic, though, but also because a bunch of guildies were on at the same time and I guess I really needed to just spend time with them? It wasn't overly lively to the point where I couldn't concentrate on what I was doing in the game, but I was able to be a little helpful and generally felt better about myself by the time I logged off. It didn't hurt that I earned, like, six achievements and got a fucking awesome sword as a quest reward. (Like, seriously. That thing is SO COOL, and it was a massive upgrade from what I'd been using since I hit 85. I may have drooled a little bit when I first got it.)

Jay told me when I logged in that he thought I'd really like the pet battles, and to no one's surprise, I REALLY DO. It's basically in-game Pokemon - super easy, time-consuming, and a lot of fun. Pretty sure I lost most of those four hours to leveling pets and battling master trainers. Uh, but, yeah. :D!

One of the few annoying things I've noticed in the expansion, though, is that you can't fly in the 85+ zones until you hit level 90. It's only a problem for me because I rely fairly heavily on being able to drop down on mining nodes in hard-to-reach areas? So it's more of an inconvience, I guess. Also I got really pissed off that all the ghost iron ore in the area around where you drop off the Alliance airship is too high a level for you to mine right away. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT. UGH.

But on the whole, Pandaria is really pretty! And the quests haven't been too awful! Except for that whole period of time where I couldn't shake Anduin even after I abandoned all of his quests, but whatever. (I hate tag-along quests, hmph.) The re-spawn time on mobs has been good but not overwhelming that I've noticed, which is nice, and the quest rewards are decent so far. Lag has been nonexistent, and there don't seem to be as many players around as there were when Cataclysm first dropped - though how much of that is phased questing and how much is people not playing, I don't know.

So, yes. Pandaria = awesome thus far. :D

Weekend was good! The wedding went off really well! I had fun! Loretta and Jay both looked amazing, and everything about the ceremony was just wonderful and awesome. I got to hang out with Bella and Gavin yesterday, Cathy and I went shopping on Saturday morning, and the bus ride home last night was, uh, harrowing. XD And then I pretty much spent all of today watching NCIS reruns.

It's been glorious. I love having cable again.

Anyway. I have more Teen Wolf fic recs for those of you who are interested! A bit more diversity than the last list, hopefully.

*que lastima pero adios (Erica/Boyd) [Erica has gone from one kind of outcast to another; but once, where she was strung out in a galaxy on her own, light-years from everyone else, she’s now part of a solar system of outcasts, rotating around the sun of their Alpha. // “Perhaps we all give the best of our hearts uncritically—to those who hardly think about us in return.” – T. H. White, The Once and Future King]

*Cupboard Love (Stiles/Derek) [AU - He’s carefully balancing the sandwiches and the two biggest tupperware containers he could find that both had functioning lids when the front door opens and he almost drops everything right there in front of the stupid fountain. If that’s Derek Hale, he’s definitely not a mountain man.]

*Metamorphosis (Stiles/Jackson) [It's a thing born of hate and desperation.] [mentions of noncon]

*Such an Unusual Kiss (Stiles/Derek) [When Stiles thinks back on it, it’s all Scott’s fault. After all, it was Scott who said flat out, “Did you ever think you might be gay?”]

*Buoyancy (Danny/Stiles) [Danny's well aware of how awesome his life is.]

*a savage such as i (Peter/Stiles) [“So what, are you taking me out to the woods to whack me? Is this the part of the movie where Al Pacino stares at the baby in the church while all of the henchman go out to slaughter his enemies? Because I kinda don’t want to die, and I definitely don’t want to be in pain. I’m not really a pain person. Well, okay, there was that one website that- No. Never mind. Shutting up now.”]

*Break the Lock If It Don't Fit (Stiles/Derek) ["Do you know what just happened?" Peter asked, frowning. "Do you know what Derek did?" / "He dislocated my shoulder," Stiles snapped, but Peter just arched an eyebrow, unimpressed by that answer.] [mentions of domestic violence]

*No-One Sleeps When I'm Awake (Lydia/Stiles) [She stretches out her foot to nudge the vibrator gently, and she can see the effort it takes him not to grind down. Obedience training: she's told him he can't move, so he won't.]

*it's neither deep nor tragic (Chris/Stiles) [Chris and Stiles are survivors on a revenge trip. For the most part, Chris leads the way, and seeing Stiles become increasingly amoral, takes issue with how much of a problem this isn't for his conscious. It all comes to a head, however, when Stiles comes back to him after having done something that Chris absolutely cannot condone.]

*You're a Dream to Me (Stiles/Derek) [Derek has the first dream in a shitty motel room just across the Nevada border, when his clothes still smell like smoke.]

*thrown to the lions (Chris/Peter) [au in which they're hopelessly in love, teenagers and reckless...until gerard finds out, threatens peter's life, and chris decides to choose a side]

*I'd Run Away (Chris/Peter) [“Hey, sunshine,” Peter says, still close when Chris slides inside. Immediately, all of his worries about his father and his fucked up family history evaporate, and there’s just Peter, filing the space with his energy, his life - God, it’s like being in the car with a hurricane or a fucking rainbow.]

*Trust That I'm a Better Man Than This (Chris/Peter) [Chris/Peter (because there's not nearly enough) where one is injured and has to go to the other for help/medical attention.] [dubcon, knife/bloodplay]

*Spiral (always-a-girl!Stiles/always-a-girl!Derek) [The first time Darcy Hale came into the Stilinski house through the front door—she was there to talk with Stiles's dad, to do damage control, probably, now that Stiles had come clean and sent everyone in the pack panicked late-night text messages—the first time, she paused just inside and stared at one of the pictures on the wall. It was Stiles with her mom, standing in front of their Christmas tree, from right after they found out her mom was sick. "Who's that?" Darcy said.]

*We Are A Battle (Chris/Peter) [“Before you shoot me, maybe you should ask yourself why I would come to you unarmed?” / Chris keeps his weapon up, safety off. Peter Hale crosses his legs in the window seat of Chris’ bedroom, arms thrown wide over the windowsill. / “Enlighten me,” he growls, trigger finger itching.]

*Broken Pieces Get Recycled (genfic, pre-relationship Stiles/Derek) [Nothing is ever just calm in Beacon Hills. No, something always has to go wrong, and this time, it's Stiles' turn in the spotlight. That doesn't mean he has to like it.]

*when the highway takes me (Stiles/Derek) [It’s been a hundred days.] [post-apocalyptic]

*The Pretty Things (are going to hell) (Stiles/Derek) [“You have something of mine,” Stiles says, and he reaches for his hood, pushing it back to reveal the rest of his face. Lips curled up in a smile promising pain and eyes like death, he says, "And now I’m going to take it back."]

*Little Blue Dress (Stiles/Derek) [Stiles attracts a nighttime visitor when he borrows blue eye shadow from Lydia, and what started as an experiment becomes a multi-act performance.]

*knit one, purl two (Stiles/Derek) [The idea sticks with him. And – he will never be sure how – he eventually finds himself in the arts and crafts department at Wal-Mart, staring at yarn.]

So Teen Wolf fandom has been really bad for me in that I've started following works in progress because a lot of the longer, really good fics are still being updated and also I have no impulse control. I KNOW, OKAY? It's awful. I can't believe it's come down to this. But whatever, some of them are just wonderful, and a decent amount are updated regularly, so.

The thing that makes this somewhat less stressful and annoying is being able to subscribe to fics and series on AO3. It's actually kind of exciting for me - I tend to forget what happens in most stories between me reading and them updating, so it's like I get to fall in love all over again every time I get an email reminder? Shut up. ANYWAY, I was going to make a rec list for this fandom anyway, and I'm going to include the works in progress I feel are worth following. I'll note them as such, of course. Fair warning.

For the record, this is my Teen Wolf tag on Pinboard.

*The Strong Scent of Evergreen (always-a-girl!Stiles/Derek) [Derek and Stiles start something new.]

*hyper heart alone (Stiles/Derek) [When Stiles returns home to help his father recover from an injury, he discovers that things have changed somewhat in his absence: Derek is working closely with Stiles' father, around the house and underfoot, generally annoying and disconcerting Stiles with his presence.

Well, Stiles isn't sure you could call all the sex they end up having annoying, but he isn't really willing to call it anything else, either.]

*The One Where Derek Is Courting And Stiles Fears The Zombie/Werewolf Apocalypse (Stiles/Derek) [Written for this prompt: Awkward courtship funtimes! Derek is courting Stiles in the way that all male animals go about impressing their mates. Giving them practical (if weird, like, Derek gives Stiles 10kg of steak) gifts, making a nice home (he starts renovating the old Hale house), weird shit like that. Stiles is oblivious, and Scott keeps sort of helplessly hinting at what Derek is doing to little effect. Make me giggle and squeal into my pillow anon.]

*Worst Case Scenario (Stiles/Derek) [Stiles is good at compartmentalizing bad news. It's partly a learned behavior, and partly because of his well practiced coping technique. It may not be the most emotionally healthy thing to do, but it gets him through the day.]

*Every Step You Take (Stiles/Derek) [Stiles accidentally ends up magically bound to Derek. It’s super.]

*Just Have to Find a Better Way of Communicating (Stiles/Scott/Allison) [Stiles just gapes at Scott as he pulls back from kissing him. Kissing Stiles. With tongue. And then Scott is smiling. Scott says, “Okay, so you have to do it exactly like that to Allison. Exactly, okay?”]

*Trickster Makes This World (Stiles/Derek) [Stiles comes back to Beacon Hills during the new moon in April.]

*Any Way You Slice It (Stiles/Derek) [Wherein Isaac is Derek and Stiles's feelings child and also everyone thinks the end of their amicable buddyfucking was something out of those CW soaps Stiles swears he doesn't watch and tries to get them back together.]

*Bittersweet Between My Teeth (Stiles/Derek) [At first he thinks it's the Adderall - the Adderall, mixed with the Jack and Coke, mixed with whatever else he shouldn't have drank - but this has never happened before, not like this.]

*wild things [series] (WIP) (Stiles/Derek) [Derek begins. Stiles begins. And wild things must always have a king.] [NOTE: The first 3 stories in this series are completed; part four is a WIP.]

*cocaine heart (Peter/Stiles/Derek) [The One Where Peter Turned Stiles Instead of Scott.] [NOTE: dubcon]

*Important Things (Stiles/Derek) [Stiles learns that even with werewolves, giant lizards and psychopathic hunters on the loose, life can still find other ways to screw with you. Case in point: everyone keeps assuming he and Derek are a couple. What the hell?]

*waiting for you to say it first (Stiles/Derek) [Four months they’ve managed to avoid one another. Stiles quit going to pack meetings. He quit doing research unless Scott really, really begged him to. He avoided driving the road that led out to the turnoff to the Hale house, he avoided going to all the spots where Derek might possibly be. Four months, and now, here they are, standing in the Minit Mart, Stiles thinks, staring down at the grimy tiles. He can hear the catch of Derek’s breath, and he closes his eyes and breathes deep.]

*Something You Give Away (Stiles/Derek) [The words were out of his mouth before he could think about finding his filter, before he could really consider just what he was setting in motion.]

*last night's dress (tiptoe out of this mess) (Stiles/Derek) [TFLN: My dad just asked me if my booty call guy that comes over at 3am and leaves at 6 would like to stay for Sunday brunch next week. You in?]

*Tell Me What You Eat (Stiles/Derek) [Stiles drags the paper bag towards him and peers inside. As soon as he opens it, he gets a whiff of delicious chocolate smell.]

*Only If For A Night (Stiles/Derek) [“Here,” Derek pulled Stiles’ red hood over his head and leaned down far too close to his personal space, “Pretend like we’re just making out. Maybe he’ll let us off with a warning.”]

*Worlds That Turn On Their Own (Stiles/Derek) [When Stiles had left Beacon Hills, he'd done it with every intention of never coming back. Ten years later, he finds himself forced back to his hometown. Of course, it's not long before things are just as they had been before -- that is, falling headlong towards disaster, and this time, stopping it isn't really an option.]

*Abbacchio (Stiles/Derek) [“I have a casserole for you,” says Scott.
Stiles triple-takes. “You what?”]

*Like a Melody (it won't leave my head) (Stiles/Derek) [Stiles doesn't notice the constant buzzing in his head until it's gone.]

*some nights (Stiles/Derek) [Derek pisses Stiles off, and Stiles issues an "open-door policy" for the teenaged werewolves in his life. (Which is, really, more of an open-window policy, because seriously: werewolves) After that it is, like, all werewolf all the time.]

*Selected Field Observations on Canis lupis irremotus (Stiles/Derek) [AU - Stiles is going to make Derek internet famous, like that one cat and that other cat. Derek just wants to do his field research.]

*Is Where... (Stiles/Derek) [Derek and Stiles go hunting. Kind of.]

*no time to wallow in the mire (Stiles/Derek) [Derek Hale fails at everything.]

*it spins like a wheel inside you (hints at Stiles/Derek) ["Do you remember your first full moon?" Laura asks. Her front is pressed against Derek’s side, he can feel her ribs under the thin cotton of her Led Zeppelin T-shirt and they’re wedged together on a double bed in a tiny hotel on the outskirts of a small town in North Carolina. ; Derek and Laura before and after the fire.]

*Blood Pounding in Our Veins (WIP) (Danny/Stiles, Stiles/Derek) [Stiles figured that Mrs. McCall finding out Scott’s secret would change things, but he’s completely unprepared for the very first thing she does, which is to invite Isaac to move in with her and Scott. In which Stiles is angry. For some very good reasons.]

*The Carnivorous Animal's Table Manners (WIP) (Peter/Stiles) [Peter has excellent table manners. Even when he's helping himself to a feast.]

*Except What Has Been Forgotten (WIP) (Stiles/Derek) [In which Stiles wakes up with a shiny new case of amnesia and it's immediately obvious that his best friend is lying to him - which might have something to do with the (hot) guy who keeps appearing his room. What the hell has he been doing for the past 18 months?]

*A Fool for Fire (WIP) (Stiles/Derek) [Stiles and Derek see their relationship in two very different ways.] [NOTE: oh my god so much angst, keep tissues handy]

*Ella (WIP) (Stiles/Derek) [There's always going to be another family of werewolves, another family of hunters, and there's always going to be Stiles right in the middle of it. Ten years after high school, after the pack, after Beacon Hills, Stiles finds himself caught up again.]

*Everything You Ever... (WIP) (Stiles/Derek) [Kink meme fill in which Derek realizes how amazing his pack would be if he had Stiles' support and loyalty the way Scott does. Then he realizes he wants more than just Stiles' support and loyalty. Unfortunately, Derek is very aware that he can't have what he wants. Until Stiles runs afoul of a witch. Then Derek realizes he can have ANYTHING he wants, if he's willing to take advantage. He hates himself for it, but he's willing to take advantage. (aka, Stiles gets hit with an Ella Enchanted-type curse, and Derek just can't help himself. Expect uncomfortable and inevitable parallels to Kate Argent, Peter being a creeper, and no happy endings)] [NOTE: dubcon/noncon]

*Reasonable to Assume (WIP) (Stiles/Derek) ["You're a werewolf! He's a werebaby! How can you not know what to do with him?"]
brilligspoons: (steve/tony)
So...I'm not going to write this story because my interest in baseball is minimal at best and basically limited to what Steve Rogers thinks about the Dodgers not being in Brooklyn anymore (and also A League of Their Own). Which I think is fair, really. This doesn't stop me from thinking it's a good idea for a fic, of course, but I am probably not the right person to follow through on it.

Background: a couple drinks into our company party on Wednesday, Kait mentioned something about Steve and Tony and baseball and...I don't even remember what else, but it turned into me thinking up an AU where Steve plays for the Dodgers in the years right before the team moves out to LA. Uh, @hubcomics then asked me about them checking for steroids, which. I say let's handwave the whole thing and make Steve's physique a product of a late growth spurt and good living. But also it's, like, 1952 and I don't even know when they would have started checking for drugs and performance enhancers? So whatever, I think we're safe on that point.

I can just imagine Steve falling to his knees on the field after losing the 1956 World Series to the Yankees and shouting DAMN YOU, LARSEN at the sky while shaking his fists. )

In conclusion, you should all just read [ profile] harmonyangel's story, Wait Till Next Year. I guarantee you it is more coherent and wonderful than this mess of an entry.

And now I work. I guess. :\
brilligspoons: (red riding)
So my love/hate relationship with Teen Wolf is spinning wildly out of control. I find this odd (and a little distressing) considering I a) hate the main character, and b) have only watched 3 episodes. Whatever, I totally have plans to watch the rest. Eventually. I've already read episode summaries for them, so I know what happens. I just get really terrible secondhand embarrassment from some of the things that happen in the show, so it's hard for me to make myself actually sit and watch.

...okay, maybe hate is too strong a word. Scott McCall is dumb as a stick, but there have been a few moments where I've wanted to pinch his cheeks, not punch them. Perhaps he gets less annoying at some point? IDK. Regardless, this is a situation where I think the fandom is a million times better than the show itself. Of course, I might be biased, seeing as it is a fandom that consists almost entirely of werewolf fic and that is one of My Favorite Things Ever. Also about 90% of the stories are about the characters who aren't Scott McCall, which is only right and proper, imo.

Luckily for my sanity, I'm not, like, tempted to write all the fic. There are stories I want, but for the most part I'm satisfied by what I've found already. Basically, Teen Wolf fandom = candy for Margaret's brain. \o/

In conclusion, you should all read Sarah Rees Brennan's liveblog of season 1. It's MAGICAL.
