Internet, I am pleased to say that I made it through yet another family Thanksgiving without punching any of my siblings. It was a close call at some points, but I restrained myself by choosing to pour myself another glass of wine rather than engaging. Hooray! I'm growing as a person! Among other things.

It was nice getting to see my nieces and nephews, too (Dad, Cathy, and I Skyped with Sarah and Kathi on Thursday afternoon - UGH THEY'RE SO CUTE). Bella and Gavin are both getting taller, and it's TERRIBLE. Bella's only 9 and already at my shoulder height. :( Look, I really enjoy not being the shortest person in the family with them around, and I'm just not prepared for them to be bigger than me quite yet. Luckily this dapper little gentleman still has some growing to do:

Monsieur Evan )

(Best thing: he likes to play hockey - my brother is a hockey coach - with spatulas, oven mitts, and bottle caps, so he spent most of Thursday doing that in my parents' kitchen. I may have died from cute a couple times.)

Anyway, in non-family news, the Teen Wolf Holidays 2013 fic collection went live today! Check it out here. There are 60 stories all told, which is AWESOME. :D
brilligspoons: (iron man YES)
So, I made a thing on Friday night.

Pic! )

My shoulder is still radiating pain down my right arm from cranking the forge blower (as seen here) and swinging a hammer down on an anvil for a couple hours, but GUYS, blacksmithing is fun! I mean, frustrating as hell until you figure out what the fuck you're doing (and even then you spend an inordinate amount of time going OH GOD WHY IS THE IRON NOT HEATING UP WHY IS THIS IMPOSSIBLE), but that's pretty much how all crafty-type things are for me. The dudes at the forge were really nice and hilarious, neither [ profile] sky_was_green nor I came away with any serious burns or anything, and I kind of want to go back and make more stuff. Maybe in the spring? We'll see.

Anyway, I got to hang out with Tina and Decklin's cats for a few hours on Saturday afternoon, and then there was the Project Runway finale and Iron Man 3 to watch. Yesterday I played a lot of WoW, caught up on The Voice, and did laundry. So...I was a little productive, at least.

Also yesterday morning: Bella facetimed me for help on a school project. :D :D :D Am the most ridiculous of ridiculous aunts, I realize, but I can't help but be pleased that she wanted to consult with me. She had to paint a pumpkin to look like a character from a book and answer some questions about personality traits that the author explicitly shows the character having with examples. Luckily for all involved, she's reading the first Harry Potter book and I have scary recall abilities? So we settled on honor and curiosity as the traits to focus on, and I gave her specific sections of the book to reference.

Yes, my $100,000 degree in English literature finally gets some use. \o?

Oh, and Yuletide assignments went out! I'd be a lot more excited if I could make myself write anything at all. BUT. I matched on two fandoms this year, so if I can kick my ass into gear, maybe I'll write my recipient two stories. :D? Still need to figure out how my TWHols fic is going to work, too, but I think I know the main plot. I'm also still interested in doing NaNo next month, but I need to sit down and work out more character details and do some world-building before I fully commit. Maybe I'll do that this coming weekend.

Okay. Let's do this, Monday.

Last night [ profile] sky_was_green and I went to a painting class at one of our favorite North End restaurants (The Living Room, where we discovered St. Germain's liqueur for the first time) and had an excellent time trying to recreate a painting of the Boston skyline and accompanying harbor. Uh, so much so that we've decided to do two other painting classes in the future? I mean, there was drinking and good music and really enthusiastic instructors - one of them was French and had a handlebar moustache - so all in all, not a bad way to spend an evening. Also, while our finished products were nowhere near perfect, they weren't, you know, horrible. Doug even knew what the painting was of before I could tell him. :D?

Anyway, this is mine:

Basically everyone there was like, "Rough day, huh?" WHATEVER. I DON'T FEEL I NEED TO EXPLAIN MY ART TO YOU.

Anyway. I'm tired and annoyed with everything today, so after work I'm going home and cooking and watching TV and reading fic and cleaning out the back porch so our landlady doesn't yell at us anymore.
brilligspoons: (evolution!)
This week in Television I Devoured: The Almighty Johnsons.

I totally admit I started watching it because my Dean O'Gorman problem reached the level previously occupied mostly by Holland Roden and Dylan O'Brien (so, like, the epically attached to his face level - but I'm trying to play this one cool, hush), but the rest of the characters hooked me by the end of the first episode. Also, I'm deliriously happy that they're filming series three right now, because I watched the series two finale this afternoon, and MAN. There may have been some sniffling and flaily NO NO NO NOT GOOD hands from me, is all I'm saying.

(I'm still processing the whole thing, otherwise I'd have more thoughts for you. I will say one thing: if series three could be all about the goddesses lounging around the apartment above the bar, drinking together and giggling a lot, I would be a very happy Retbot. Dawn can come too, because she's great and I love her the MOST, and she needs a vacation from Anders.)

(No but really, I have a lot of feelings for and about Dawn. She is my favorite.)

Anyway, that's sort of my life right now, besides writing and work and occasionally having epiphanies about Teen Wolf.

Here, have some pictures of my niece and nephews to make up for my boringness. )
brilligspoons: (time-traveling nazis)

Like, I've gone over everything with Kyleigh and emailed all the people who will have to deal with shit while I'm gone, and I still have to get all the way to 2:45 tomorrow. PLUS the person who does all the checking on my reports every month hasn't said anything to me about them since I told her they were ready (Monday!), and if she waits until tomorrow to do this, going to be SO CROSS with her. But I will also make her edit everything because VACATION.

I really should have taken tomorrow off.

Anyway. The Museum of Natural History has a special exhibit on whales (!!!) going on right now, so I am now 1000% more excited about taking Bella and Gavin there next week. I don't even care if they don't give a shit about whales. I'll make up for it by taking them to the space show, or something. Regardless, the trip should be sufficiently nerdy and ~*educational*~ and satisfy Julia's request that we don't just sit around the house all week.

Mom and Dad are going up to CT for Easter, so Cathy and I are off the hook for that morning. We've decided to celebrate by eating all the pancakes Hoboken has to offer and making sure our aunt's old champagne glasses still work by drinking all the mimosas (for science). We feel like this is the best possible way for us to spend our not-holiday.

In conclusion:

Evan. )
brilligspoons: (steve/tony)
Man, you know what really sucks? The Monday back at work after a week's vacation. It's pretty much the worst. Luckily I have [ profile] pocky_slash and Doug and Kyleigh around to wrap my computer monitor and phone in rubber bands while I'm gone, in spite of the 50/50 chance that I'd stab them all in retribution.

Here, have some blurry pictures from my phone. )

Tonight I'm going home with Kait so I can see [ profile] mcwonthelottery's face for a bit, and tomorrow is writing with [ profile] sky_was_green! Posting at [ profile] tw_holidays starts Saturday! I have a metric fuckton of work to do before Wednesday and need to avoid crawling under my desk for an extended session of gross sobbing!

Also I should probably start looking for people's presents. I think I know what I'm doing for Bella and Gavin and Evan, and Sarah and Kati should be easy. The little cousins...I don't even know. Maybe I'll chip in on whatever Cathy's getting them, but we'll see. I'm not really sure what they're into anyway. /shrug

...and maybe I should eat some real food at some point. Woman cannot live on rice krispie treats and chai lattes alone, or something.
brilligspoons: (how to be normal)
Vacation was glorious. I had a hard time last night, both because I knew I had to go into work today and because my niece had an emotional breakdown over me leaving, but it's also nice to be back in Boston and in my apartment, so. Yeah. Am adjusting back to life with mass transportation and no car (sort of strange how quickly I got used to driving again). I went to the beach twice and am tan/sunburned. We also went to Jenkinson's on Friday night, and I have bruises in weird places from going on rides that were not made for adults. Ahh, the things I do for my nephew. (Look, there is even pictorial evidence that I had fun.)

Mostly I spent the week reading/sleeping/watching TV/playing Wii sports with the kids. Mom was in the hospital for several days with a heart problem (she's fine now!), so we had dinner on Wednesday at Julia's instead of the parents' and went to fireworks after that. I saw Spider-man on Tuesday with Ashley and hung out with Loretta and Jay on Saturday night. Did some writing but not much. Cathy and I saw Moonrise Kingdom and loved it. Basically all was well in my world.

And I feel like I need another vacation to recover from it. *flops*

I managed to read 4 books and start a 5th this week! It's the most I've read in quite a while. I enjoyed all of them in varying degrees, so have a quick overview:

1. Touch of Frost (Jennifer Estep) - There are 2 strikes against this novel, one being the overuse of epithets, the other being the main character's tendency to slut-shame every couple of pages. Uh, other than those, I really enjoyed it? Like, it's a really awesome idea for a story, and I liked Gwen a lot when she wasn't judging these 2 or 3 other girls who happened to have slept with a couple boys. If you're able to ignore these things, I recommend at least trying it. I've put the second story on hold - we'll see if the author tones the stupid shit down at all.

2. After Midnight (Teresa Madeiros) - Basically this is a typical period romance novel but with vampires and vampire hunters. It was enjoyable, and the heroine was pretty awesome. Ta-da!

3. The Night Tourist (Katherine Marsh) - [ profile] sky_was_green recommended this to me, and it only took me until the end of the fourth page to understand why she liked it (Jack, the main character, agonizes over which meaning of the word occidit to use in his translation of Book Ten of the Metamorphoses). Overall it was super charming! I think it dragged a bit in places, and it waited too long to reveal some plot points, but I liked it a lot.

4. The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake (Aimee Bender) - I. Love. This. Book. It's beautifully written, and the concept is SO interesting. I highly recommend it. Love love love love love. :D

I started reading Angelmaker (Nick Harkaway), but it's boring, so I'm probably going to drop it soon. Also started Joy for Beginners (Erica Bauermeister), but I haven't read enough to form an opinion yet.

Anyway. How are you, friends? Do anything exciting last week? :D?
brilligspoons: (keysmash)
So as I discovered yesterday, Eve 6 came out with a new album recently. I hadn't realized they'd gotten back together after splitting a few years back? So it was a pleasant thing to stumble upon! They're one of my favorite bands - I totally used to beg my sisters to drive around the block a couple extra times if Inside Out came on the radio while we were in the car. Anyway, I downloaded the new tracks last night, and mostly I like them a lot. I will say that the lyrics are not as good as I was expecting, unfortunately. I mean, the words are a huge part of why I like their music so much, and these aren't quite as...witty, I guess, as their other albums are. /shrug Some of the songs are pretty damn catchy, though, so it definitely wasn't a waste of money.

I uploaded one of my favorites to tumblr last night, which you can hear here. Also, they're playing a free show somewhere in Boston on May 19th with Spin Doctors, Switchfoot, and Third Eye Blind. No, we did not travel back in time to 1997, it is still 2012. I'm debating whether or not to go - on the one hand, it's free and I've been dying to see them live for a long time; on the other, there's possibly something fannish happening that day that I don't want to miss. Decisions! I hate making them!

Moving on.

The MoP beta continues to be pretty cool! I got all the way through the new start zone last night. I spent most of that 8 level stretch cursing loudly at the game (WHOSE BRIGHT IDEA WAS IT TO HAVE SWARMING MONKEYS THAT SPAWN ALMOST INSTANTANEOUSLY GAAAAAAHHHHH) (also WHOSE BRIGHT IDEA WAS IT TO HAVE A QUEST WHERE YOU'RE ATTACHED TO A FUCKING NPC THAT BLOCKS YOUR WAY WHEN YOU TRY TO PICK UP THE QUEST ITEMS ASKNA;KNVSLKNVSLKNSKN;ASMA;), but I'm happy to announce that I finally made it to Orgimmar! And then the beta client kicked me off 3 times in 30 minutes because of critical errors (all reported), so I gave up. I'm sure that game content from here until 85 is the same, so I think I might create a level 85 toon and see what's happening in the 85+ content. Yay more levels!

Also, man, I totally forgot that the new zone is on the back of a GIANT FUCKING TURTLE. Christ, I love this game. Even when it's frustrating the ever-loving shit out of me. Which is pretty often. :D:

I'm behind on all my comics, but I keep seeing little bits here and there on Twitter about American Vampire that make me desperate to catch up. Maybe that's what I'll do on Saturday? Unf. I came to the realization that while I ADORE the story, much of the appeal stems from the art. [ profile] liveonthesun reblogged some covers Rafael Albuquerque did for Nomad: Girl Without a Home recently, and it hit me that I would pretty much read any comics he draws for, no questions asked. I just like his art a lot, okay? Shut up.

Exhibit A: American Vampire #24 cover )

Exhibit B: Catwoman o___o )

Exhibit C: Nomad! )

So pretty. *____* I really only have incomprehensible flailing and keysmashing for you at this point, so I'll spare you. >.>

I started a new Steve/Tony fic the other day because I fail at staying focused on one project at a time. I got the idea for it from Incredible Hulk (which was SO BORING, how could a movie about the motherfucking HULK be SO BORING, guys?), and it's probably stupid to everyone else, but whatever, Imma write this thing. Weee! :D

That's all from me, friends. *SMOOCH*
brilligspoons: (catastrophe)
Blah blah blah foot injury! )

Also I am savoring my first coffee since Friday. :D :D :D :D

I started playing the Mists of Pandaria beta on Friday night! I went with the new race/class combo like 99% of the other people playing, and I'm REALLY enjoying it so far. I only made it to level 4 before the server started kicking me off, but my preliminary feelings about the pandarens and the monk class are mostly positive. Obviously there are TONS of issues that need to be worked out. For example, the first quest chain involves you burning the Edict of Temperance (I wasn't paying attention as to why really), but a) there were THOUSANDS OF PLAYERS TRYING TO DO IT AT ONCE, and b) there was nothing blocking out a space in front of the edict, so you couldn't get anywhere near the fucking thing in order to complete the quest. I ended up grouping with a bunch of people (after 30 minutes of trying on my own), and like a minute later it worked and I could move on to the next thing. Ugh.

Regardless! The new zone is SUPER PRETTY. I'll have to take more screencaps next time I sign in. Also I am loving the pandaren design a LOT, oh my god:

Screencap! )

ISN'T SHE BEAUTIFUL? Her name is Arynna, and I love her. I'm still trying to puzzle out some of the aspects of the monk class, but the fighting style is really quite lovely to watch. Yes, I am much more likely to comment on how pretty things are instead of how functional they might be. One of these days the two will meet. I think.

Didn't play Saturday or Sunday on account of how awkward it was to elevate my foot while sitting at my desk. Actually, I didn't do much of anything beyond mainline season 1 of NCIS (and start season 2 yesterday). I edited one of the BBs a little? But I didn't write any new words. Bah. >:\

ANYWAY. How are you all doing? Anything good/bad going on, friends?
brilligspoons: (moira)

Dragonmaw Clan. I didn't realize how easy it would be to get enough rep with them - I actually made it all the way to honored before I remembered I only needed to be friendly to get the tabard. Uh, anyway. Achievement acquired! I rule the world!

So I never ran dailys on a regular basis because I didn't see the point before? But today I did the fishing and cooking quests in Thunder Bluff because, well, I was there and it was basically free XP. I'm...ridiculously close to hitting 85, any XP I can get is welcome, and the gold you receive doesn't hurt either. Regardless, the fishing daily made me giggle; I had to fish 2 amorous mud snappers and 2 randy smallfish from a nearby lake.

Screencaps. )

I love this game.

[ profile] therealljidol Week 5: Inconceivable

I am, above most-if-not-all things, a creature of habit. Every morning when I get to work, I log on to my computer, open Outlook, and check my voicemail. Then I open Firefox, load my personal email, LiveJournal, Twitter, Tumblr, the Archive of Our Own (otherwise known as AO3), and a multitude of other websites I use for Actual Work into separate tabs, in that exact order. No deviations, not in the entire year I've been employed at my current job. I get cranky when any of my sites are down for whatever reason and I can't get into them in the morning; I know, I'm predictable (and spoiled) that way.

This morning as I'm going through this routine, I clicked the handy link to AO3 I keep on my journal, but when I switched to that tab, I saw this:

I immediately panicked. My breath caught in my throat, and my heart plummeted into my stomach.

AO3 - blocked? What? WHAT? How could they DO this? Don't they know I depend on my ability to read fanfic during the day to ensure I don't end up screaming bloody murder at someone? How am I expected to work under these conditions? Isn't there something in the Geneva Convention about this sort of situation? It's just not right, I tell you!

Naturally I took to Twitter to express my horror at this despicable turn of events, knowing that my friends would flock to comfort me in my time of need. [ profile] pocky_slash, who shares cubicle space with me, responded shortly thereafter with the appropriate amount of despair:

I'm still having trouble processing this, an hour and change after discovering this betrayal. The day is ruined. We will spend the next 7 or so hours wandering about the office in a haze of hurt and dejection, and even the knowledge that management is buying us pizza for lunch is no source of comfort. One truth remains: there will be no dawn for men Margaret and Kait.

I feel I should put a disclaimer on this entry: Kait and I do do Actual Work during the day, we swear! The rule in our department is that as long as our to-do lists get done in a timely manner, we're allowed to goof off on the internet as often as we want. As much as we joke about it, we're not actually slackers. Most of the time. ;P

I don't even know how far along in the process I am for realsies, but here is a picture of the baby blanket I'm making for Jen -

Cut for size )

Becca told me to get 3 skeins of yarn but that I wouldn't need all of them? And I just started the 2nd skein last weekend. So I think I'm doing pretty well - I mean, Jen's not due until March, which means I've got time. The bottom of the blanket makes it perfectly obvious that I'm a novice knitter to anyone with an eye for these things (when I showed it to Mom when she visited in October - "Oh, messed up the pattern here, you realize that?" "Yes, Mother, perfectly aware, thanks." "Just making sure. Nice, otherwise."), but I think my second blanket will be much prettier.

Since I'm more or less on schedule, and Andrea's not due until April anyway, I might try my hand at a scarf or two once I finish this one. IDK. Something less...bulky. There's just so much blanket to maneuver right now. XD

Anyway. I'm going to try to be productive now. I make no guarantees, really, but I ought to at least poke at things. I'm just so TIRED. :\

It's Halloween! Let's do a little trick or treating, shall we? Comment here (as many times as you like) with "Trick or Treat!" and a request (for a picture, or a drabble, or something!) or a prompt or whatever, and I'll either respond with whatever that is (treat!), or I'll give you something entirely different of my choosing (trick!).

Fuck my maudlin bullshit. Let's look at cute things. That's what needs to happen on an awful, dark, rainy day like today.

I woke up to an email from [ profile] mcwonthelottery (with the subject line "good morning") containing THIS LINK. I don't think I tell Becca I love her often enough, you guys, but I DO, so so so so much, okay? I do. It's science, I can't help it. Anyway. Below are some of the pics from the link, as well as a bunch of shit from Tumblr.

Feel free to add your own in the comments. CUTE FUZZY ANIMALS FOREVER.

brilligspoons: (weird pony thing)

So here's the deal. I need two new roommates to move in at the end of August/beginning of September. I thought I had one lined up, but she backed out yesterday, and now I'm starting to panic a little bit. I have a craigslist ad posted right here with most of the details, but if you'd rather read this entry and get more information than you ever wanted, here you go:

The lease goes from September 1 2011 through August 31 2012. Rent is $533/month per person, and they ask for first and last months' rent up front. The apartment is located in the Oak Square area of Brighton, MA. It's the first floor of an older house; there are 3 bedrooms, and the two that are open are on the smaller side but have mad closet space. There's also a TON of storage space both in the living room/sitting area and in the basement. The kitchen is HUGE and has a pantry, we have our own washer and dryer (and they're free) in the basement, and there's also a three-season porch in the back of the house for our use.

Trust me, it's awesome. I'll post pictures down below.

All utilities except water are our responsibility. Gas and electric never get crazy expensive, unless we leave all the lights on and cook every night, and internet is also affordable. All told, you're probably going to end up paying less than $600/month between rent and bills.

The only big expensive thing about the place is that it's oil heat. The tank gets filled 2-3 times during the winter, and the last time we had it filled it cost us $285 per person (the price fluctuates, obviously). I am being completely up front about this because I know it's not an ideal situation.

There're 3 or 4 different bus lines that run by us, not to mention the express buses that go right into downtown and Government Center. There are also 3 grocery stores and a Target in the area, all within a 10-15 minute drive, if that (all are also accessible by bus).

THIS IS IMPORTANT: the landlady does not want any pets. It sucks, I know, but that's how it is. Also no smokers, but if you're going to, I trust you'd do it outside and clean up after yourself. I've lived with smokers most of my life, so I personally don't care as long as it doesn't happen inside.

I'm not comfortable living with men, so I'm looking to live with women. Uh, pretty much if you're willing to help keep the common areas neat and tidy, I'm cool with you.

About me - I'm a twentysomething fangirl, I work downtown, I'm an awkward turtle, and I like video games and reading and music and movies. Also: wine. I'm quiet and respectful. Occasionally I'll have a friend or two over, and maybe I'll have a larger party once in a blue moon, nothing crazy. All in all, I'm pretty chill. I can provide character references if you want.

...that's pretty much it. Feel free to email me with any questions, or if you're interested at all in rooming with me. Please use my non-fandom&friends email address for this; it's <3

Here, have some photos of the place: )
